Before induction heating is born, the flame furnace is the only choice for forging industrial heating, it is better than any electric heater in terms of economy, including induction heating equipment. Because every conversion from power generation to billet heating is accompanied by loss.
However, in the forging industry, the heating of the blank using induction relative to the flame furnace has two features as following:

The benefits of this feature to the heating of the forging blank are:

①The scale and decarburization layer on surface of the blank are very less for fast heating. Heating with a flame furnace, the scale of the amount is 3%-4%, while the induction heating can be controlled at 0.05% -0.5%. Induction heating can get a cleaner blank, which is a useful factor to the blank for high quality manufacturing.
②Convenient for local heating. Heating zone temperature can be quickly done, the temperature transition zone is relatively short, reduces the power loss, saving energy and material.
③Short heating time, improves productivity and reduces production costs.
④Fast heating rate, short heating time, bring fine austenite grain. The induction heated work piece has a very good microstructure, this is a good base for quality forging part.
⑤Quick start of induction furnace. The flame furnace has many refractory materials, so it needs to absorb a lot of heat to start, namely large heat loss. When not working, it must also maintain a certain temperature.
⑥Less formation of the scale, longer dies life. Data shows that the less scale due to induction heating can prolong the die life about 30%.

It means, for a specific blank, the specifications, material, forging temperature, beat, the power for induction heating is basically constant. Therefore, you can use the beat to determine the exact heating temperature, the process is reproducible and the quality of the product is stable.
The benefits of this feature to the heating of the forging blank are:

① Because of the compact equipment, adjustable power, induction heating equipment can be used with forging equipment in the production line for synchronous production.
② The use of induction heating in a specific power, beat conditions can effectively prevent the blank lower heating or overheating, guarantee the quality of forgings fundamentally.
③ Easy to work with the computer, temperature measurement devices (such as infrared thermometer), PID temperature control devices, semiconductor inverter (such as SCR, IGBT, MOSFET inverter) and other components to form a closed-loop temperature control system to achieve precise temperature control, and to achieve automation, to ensure product quality and stability.
④Easy to implement modern management system in forging factory.

CONCLUSION

The advantages above can improve the environmental and working conditions greatly, induction heating use less manpower and less production area, easy to meet the modern production requirement as 3S standard (SURE, SAFE, SAVING) and 3C standard (COOL, CLEAN, CLAM). It is quite reasonable to say that induction heating of large volume billets is the ideal way for the current forging heating, especially the relatively single species.
